The ancient epic of Ramayana has held profound significance in Hindu culture for ages. With its themes of duty, honour, love, and righteousness, this timeless narrative has been adapted and retold innumerable times over the years. And now, director Nitesh Tiwari is all set to present this age-old story through his cinematic lens.
Tiwari’s Ramayana is reportedly slated to be a three-part series. Each instalment will explore different facets of the epic. The initial chapter will introduce audiences to Lord Rama, his family, his union with Sita, their ensuing exile, and Sita’s subsequent kidnapping. The second part will delve deeper into the journey of Lord Ram and his companions, including Lord Hanuman and the Vanara Sena. It will also explore the challenges they faced, including the construction of the Ram Setu. The final instalment will culminate in an epic showdown between the forces of good and evil, leading to the defeat of the formidable demon king.
Headlined by Ranbir Kapoor, who portrays the noble Prince of Ayodhya, the film also stars Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as the antagonist Ravana, and Amitabh Bachchan as Lord Ram’s father, Raja Dashrath. Sunny Deol, Arun Govil, Ravi Dubey, Lara Dutta, Sakshi Tanwar, and Rakul Preet Singh are also part of Tiwari’s directorial, according to reports.
Filming commenced on April 2 in Mumbai. To bring the epic saga to life, the makers have bought on board the Academy Award-winning VFX company DNEG. Media reports suggest that Kapoor will join the shoot in mid-April, and the other stars will follow suit to shoot their respective parts. Yash, who is currently filming for his next project Toxic, is expected to join the shoot after 60 days.
The director reportedly started shooting with body doubles and junior artists. The Mumbai schedule is expected to be followed by a London schedule to capture scenes set in Lanka.
Reports indicate that a set worth ₹11 crore is being prepared for Ayodhya. Similar sets will be designed for scenes based in Gurukul, the forest, and Mithila. Recently, viral pictures showed Kapoor posing with an archery coach, fueling speculations that the actor was preparing for his role in “Ramayana.”
The film is scheduled to release in 2025. Official announcements regarding the star cast, release date, and more are expected from the makers soon.
