Emrata Ratajkowski recently unveiled her ‘divorce rings’ on Instagram, sparking curiosity among us mere mortals. But what exactly are they? Following her decision to part ways with her husband Sebastian Bear-McClard in 2022, she embarked on a symbolic transformation of her wedding ring to shift her perspective on its significance. Her original wedding ring, a ‘toi et moi’ ring symbolising ‘you and me,’ is a timeless classic adorned with two gemstones instead of one.
Inspired by her friend Stephanie Danler’s essay ‘The Unravelers’ in ‘The Paris Review,’ which narrates her grandmother’s snake ring, adorned with stones from various marriages, Ratajkowski embraced the concept of a ring reflecting the multifaceted experiences of a woman’s life. She told Vogue that, “I loved the idea of a ring unabashedly representing the many lives a woman has lived.”
Turning to Alison Chemla, the creative mind behind Alison Lou, the brand responsible for her original ring, Ratajkowski collaborated once again to reimagine her two-stone wedding ring. The result? A stunning transformation yielding two distinct rings. The pear-shaped diamond found its place on her pinky, making a bold statement, while additional trapezoid diamonds were incorporated into the princess-cut diamond, creating the illusion of a larger stone. This innovative approach breathed new life into the narrative surrounding her engagement ring, infusing it with freshness and individuality.
What’s particularly fascinating is Ratajkowski’s inspiration drawn from none other than the iconic Rihanna, who casually sported a diamond ring on her pinky toe. Thus, the idea for the pear-shaped diamond pinky ring was born. As for the other ring, Ratajkowski opted for trapezoid stones to impart a timeless elegance.
In her interview with Elle, Ratajkowski said, “Obviously our culture fixates so much on youth and conventional standards of beauty, often reducing a woman’s or femme presenting person’s value solely to these attributes, but I vehemently definitely don’t feel that way.”
Expanding on her point, she asserted, “I’ve lived a multitude of lives. I’ve lived a lot of lives. I’m 32. I’ve lived a lot of lives already and I plan to live more, and I’m not gonna be shy about that. I’m not embarrassed of that”.
In a world where societal expectations often confine women to narrow definitions of value, Ratajkowski’s bold embrace of her multifaceted identity is a beacon of empowerment. Through her journey of self-discovery and resilience, she not only redefines the narrative around divorce but also champions the freedom to live authentically and unapologetically.
